Guys,

My 2006 D22 ZD30 has just started to make a strange noise that definitely wasn't there previously.

When accelerating in each gear I'm hearing a 'whooshing' or 'hissing' type exhaust noise just as it's coming on boost. I'm not getting any noise increase similar to what ordinarily occurs with a cracked exhaust or hole in the muffler etc.

I haven't had a chance to have a look at things yet. It seems to be running as well as ever but am a bit perplexed as to what it could be.

The ute only has 57,000 very careful kilometres on it with oil & filter changes every 5000km so I wouldn't think it's anything too serious.

Any ideas?

Russ

Check for air leaks. They are very common for splitting the silicon hose between the throttle body and the crossover pipe. Check thats not split first.

Mate i will bet it is one of the four small 8mm bolts at the back of the turbo. you will need to remove the heat shield to see them and the bottom two are hard to see.
I had one come out on me and it sounds exactly as you describe, i had two so called diesel specialists tell me all sorts of BS, but it turned out to be a 50cent bolt

And if either of those 2 hoses are split, Head down to a hydraulic or industrial hose supplier. The hoses will be about $10 each versus about $120 each at nissan

Damn you Fatboy. Haha.

I'll bet hose.

Yeah with only 57k on the clock but that age it is likely to be a hose ..... BUT

I am still going with the bolts, I know of a fair few now that have done it, and i did notice a little loss in power when the hose let go,BUT no loss in power when the bolt fel out just a loud "WOOSHING" sound

Thanks for your prompt replies fellas. I'm going to try and have a look at it this week or the weekend at the latest and will let you know what I find.

Cheers and thanks again,

Russ

If your going to take the heat shield off the dumppipe/turbo Give the bolts a good spray of wd40 or crc, And drink a coffee while it has a chance to work. I replaced the exhaust on mine and the heat shield bolts needed a ten minute soak to free up

I had a similar noise. Turned out the exhaust had split in half at the flange under the passenger side front seat
