Sorry for this as the firs post, but my son is stuck in the bush and has done an input shaft on his 2006 D22, he wants to know if he can drive it home with the tailshaft out and hubs turned out, will the wheel bearing be OK

Thanks in advance

i posted it on patrol forum.

wheel bearings should be fine. but front diff is really weak so take it easy on it.

yeah I saw that thanks, what lubricates the bearings, I am scanning the net to try to get him an answer

Input shaft or tail shaft???

if he's done an input shaft he aint going nowhere except towed

Don't take the shaft out of the diff or transfer case, just undo all the bolt and tie it up out of the way. As said above, take it very easy, the truck is now only 2 wheel drive and front wheel at that.

Edit: what do you mean by "the hubs turned out"?

He reckons front input shaft, not tailshaft, he can still drive it as a 2 wheel drive, but he wants to drive from Woods Point to Shepparton

those little dials on the ends of the axles near the wheel nuts, sorry I should have been clearer, it is his front input shaft

Ok...input shaft as in not the "inputshaft" that drives the gearbox via the clutch..yes.

if so...drive home on the front diff.....at least get into Jami or to Mansfield for the night if needs be.

Front diff is the issue, not the rear diff, his words were "front input shaft"

if you mean front input shaft i assume hes actually broken the front diff which is not uncommon. in which case unlock the front hubs and drive it in 2wd.
if he needs low range unbolt the front prop shaft. i can't tell you if it needs to stay in or you can remove it totally. removing it may drain the transfer box of fluid.

he has buggered his front diff, that much I do know, he has got it out of the bush to Woods Point and wants to drive it to Shepparton but he is not sure if the front wheel bearings will be lubricated enough for the trip home, are they splashed lubed from the front diff oil or are they stand alone greased bearings as he has lost all the diff oil apprently

Dont worry about the front bearings, they will be ok

there is 4 bolts at each end of the front drive shaft...unbolt the whole shaft and drive home in 2wd as per normal...no worries it will be ok for a 1000k

Stand alone greased in the hub it self.
What he can do if he's worried, undo the 4 bolts that join the prop shaft to the front diff and tie it out of the way.

going by message on patrol forum hes out of the bush. so he can just drive home in 2wd with unlocked hubs without having to undo front prop shaft.

I forgot it has IFS, he has pulled the prop shaft out, turned the hubs out and has driven it to Woods Point.

Thanks everyone for your help, he is going to drive it home tomorrow and repair it here

He actually broke the input shaft into the transfer case, snapped it in 2 just after the front uni.

After whacking a 2nd hand diff in it, we discovered this in the transfer case, is it an issue?

Yes that's an issue alright. It should be making all sorts of wicked rattly noises with the chain that loose!

I'd question how that happened though. In our vehicles, because there's no LSD between the front and rear axle, we shouldn't engage 4HI or 4LO when the road surface is firm: rule of thumb is "if you can't move in 2WD, that's when you engage 4WD". Anything else causes the damage you're looking at.

Replace the chain. Send a PM to Nizzbits and ask for a price on a new one. Include exact details of model (eg 2006 D22 3.3L V6).

I wonder if that's also how the input shaft got damaged?

My son knows how to 4 wheel drive correctly. I have driven and owned 4x4's since the mid 80's.

There wasn't an issue until he did the front diff, I am not sure if they are related
