What's even more amazing is that back in those days, petrol engines ("motor spirit") would not necessarily have distinct intake and exhaust strokes - their relative efficient was woeful to say the least and their power output a tiny fraction of today's engines.

Needless to say, they didn't have to have all the other widgets that turn their half-ton glorified horseless cart into a 3T 4WD Navara. No emission controls (I mean, just LOOK at that thing smoking) and no safety devices. Air bags? Nope. Seat belts? One look at the dings in the roof of that thing and you'll know there was no click or clack happening in there.
