Shudder at take off and slowing to stop - auto

Hi, long time lurker, but also member!

My '15 ST has an intermittent issue where it shudders when taking off from stopped, and occasionally at under 5kph when stopping. Also can feel like there is a restriction when to oh take your foot off the brake from stopped and it doesn't want to creep forward like normal without accelerator (if that makes sense?)

Nissan looked at it a few months back, checked codes and blamed some error with it being between 4wd and 2wd. I hadn't used 4wd for a good year prior though. It did however go away for a while, but problem is back.

It's out of warranty, and not keen to go back for their temporary, $250 code clear only fix. Could it be something else?

Last time my older obd scanner didn't pick up the fault code either

There are a number of possibilities, some easy to check, others not so.

* Drive shafts. Get under the car and really give them a hard wiggle (and I don't mean an excited Anthony Field). The unis should not have any movement in them at all. Pay particular attention to the rearmost (the one that goes into the rear diff) and especially the rear diff bearing.

* Front brakes sticking (cracked/warped disc). Jack up each front wheel and give it a spin. It should turn over easy. Check the next point at the same time.

* Front wheel bearings. I'm about to replace my front right bearing again (2nd time in 325,000km).

* Torque converter. This requires a specialist tool, most auto transmission joints will have this. You are looking to see the percentage of slip that the TC is allowing. Choose your auto mechanic wisely. It might be best to engage their services on a "diagnosis only" basis so they can't simply say "right, it's x and y and we've already fixed it so that'll be $3000!". A 2nd-hand gearbox from a wreck is cheaper than rebuilding yours.

If Nissan were correct, you'd have a terrible grinding noise as the car tries to engage 4WD, but can't.

IMO, you've almost certainly got a problem with the AT fluid in the box. It's a very well known issue with auto's across the brands, not just Nissan.

I think you need to drop the pan, FLUSH (not just replace) the fluid & then replace the filter. You may need to do drive it a bit & then do the above more than once to correct the problem.

As to what the problem with the AT fluid is? Who knows! It maybe a number of things.
