Can someone advise if the head needs to be re-torqued after set travel distance following replacement of head gasket.

39nm? no way. If the last step in the torque specs is to tighten it a certain amount of degrees then it wont need re checking as they are torque to yield. Specs should come with the new gasket.

Torque depends on the manufacturer of the kit mate. All are different, the op should refer to the recommendations supplied by whatever is installed. My post was in reference to a Repco kit I saved 2 years ago.

Oddly enough you're both right. The complete instructions are:

1) Measure the external diameter of the head bolts at two points, one 11mm from the threaded tip and the other 65mm from the threaded tip (or the point of any visible 'necking'). The measurements must not vary by more than 0.15mm.

2) Apply liquid gasket to the gasket in an even bead ensuring that none of it will enter the oil passages.

3) Tighten the 18 bolts in a specific order (starting in the middle and working your way out) to 39.2Nm. When complete, tighten each bolt precisely by a further 180 degrees.

4) Measure the distance at the front of the cylinder block to the top of the cylinder head above that point. It should be between 23.53 - 24.07mm.

Manual at p241 is rather handy and shows all this with pictures of ridiculously expensive tools too.
