G'day all. I just posted in another thread first so I thought I had better say hello here also and post my first question.

I actually wanted to thank everyone who has posted meaningful stuff on here. It has helped me make a decision reading the good, the bad and the ugly on these things. It is one thing to drive a brand new demo a couple of k's down the road but doesn't really simulate owning one and dealing with issues that arise.

I am after performance, but cannot justify the price of a 550 (or the wait for one) for what is essentially a $15k premium over the 2.5 for an engine and trans. Besides, I am getting into one of these because of my lifestyle anyway and I am sick of spending money on cars...... Here come the mods:sarcastic: the price of a Toyota with a four speed auto and no power is just unreal. I couldn't buy one of those ugly Tritons but same deal with no power. My mate has a BT50 and it is a piece of shi.... I borrow it occasionally. About to be superseded as you know anyway and not too soon! But can't wait for the new ones. I would have bought an Amorok it there was an auto available! And if they are smart enough one day to shoehorn in the V6 diesel out of the toerag.

So the Nissan got the gong.

So, I bought an auto diesel STX in flame red yesterday which gets delivered first week in July. It's on the docks somewhere now. Nudge bar, mats, tow bar all the little things. I'm not a hardcore offroader nor do I want to be. At worst, beach and getting to mates motocross tracks which are built in some funky places.

So I have a couple of questions, the first of which will certainly make a few people chuckle......

I don't actually want or need to carry 800 odd kilo's in the tray and the ute will spend the majority of it's time on the black stuff. So, to make it ride nicer I was actually thinking of taking a leaf out of the rear springs. Question is, which one? Thought I might ask you guys before I ask a suspension specialist. Everyone is raising theirs and I want to make mine a little softer. I don't want to just add weight to the tray, no point in wasting performance/braking on artificial weight.

Crap, I forgot the second question.........

Dammit I was going to answer the second question too.

Welcome to the forums anyway, I'm sure someone will have some advice for you.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm no suspension expert but I do know that the standard springs sag after a while - mine have - and for that reason you might want to see a suspension specialist. I wouldn't go to ARB/TJM or the like, because they're all nicely experienced in increasing the ride height and load capacity, but I'm not sure how well they'd go in the other direction.

The problem with reducing your load capacity, of course, is you'll end up not being able to put the motorbikes in the back - each one weighs what, 120-150kg? Put two of those and you exceed the standard leaf pack's load capacity anyway.

A suspension specialist would be able to advise you better. If they promise that air bags will be your salvation, consider carefully: there are a number of ute owners that swear by air bags, and others that will show you photos of their ute with a broken chassis, caused by the airbag system.

For my money, I find that I can modify the ride (over speed humps and the like) by modifying the speed of the vehicle. It behaves much better in the local Coles car park when I'm below 100km/h!

Thanks Old Tony. Good stuff to consider. I will have a chat to some suspension guys on their 2 cents worth first.

There would only ever be one bike in the tray. Any more and it's trailer time with all the gear anyway so max load even with gear should never really even exceed 150-200 kgs.

Thanks Krafty for the answer to that second question! :) I will take it on board.

As per Tony's comments, the standard suspension will sag pretty quickly - so i would not be playing with reducing the no's of leafs in the suspension. If you want it to settle quicker - leave the bike in the back for the first 6 months, that'll do the trick very nicely. In fact, just leaving some 50+ kg in the back will help the ride a lot better even from new.

Oh, and i like Krafty's answer to your 2nd question too. Very helpfull fello.
:ha:

I thought the stock springs worked OK with better shocks on my KC and weere quite comfortable until I added a canopy.

I'm with the others, it may take 6 months but the suspension WILL sag.

Mitch

Cool. I will just drive it for six months before making any changes. The ride isn't that bad anyway really.

Still haven't remembered the second question dammit.
