I have a straight through on one vehicle and a muffler on another no cat, prefer the muffler but then like it quite nowadays and think the pipe only sounds crappy on these motors but mine are YD25's.

So go a muffler rather than a cat?
I'm after better air flow not to fussed about sound.

The noise is not loud without the muffler just sounds crappy IMHO unless booting it but only going off a neighbours 3L d22, from the cabin in mine can't really hear that much difference, mind you I am a bit deaf :) too much shooting/loud music when younger and stereo helps.
I would go muffler if legal problems cat can be put in later, it's not hard.

If you're worried about the legalities, get a cat and no muffler it will quieten it down a bit anyway. I had an xforce on my yd25. Originally with just a muffler. It was really quiet, so I cut the muffler out and put a straight section of pipe in. It wasn't overly loud, not really any drone being a ute, but sounded really raspy from outside. I ended up getting a hotdog and putting that in. It reduced a lot of the raspyness but didn't change the overall sound a lot.

I've got a gu common rail patrol now and went with just a hotdog and it sounds pretty good. But different turbo to the zd30 d22 though so will sound slightly different. These we're both 3" complete turbo back systems.
