G'day all, not too long ago I blew a 2003 ZD30 motor which was in my d22 and I went to a wreckers and bought a pearler of a new motor from a 2006 ZD30 Navara which was apparently in a vehicle used by monash uni maintenance staff. Anyway, I noticed that I think its the turbo that sounds different like not a whistle but like a, I suppose, hair dryer sound when I rev it up a little bit as opposed to my old motor. Just curious, was there any reported differences between a 2003 and 2006 ZD30 motor? :)

Can u post a video here with the noise. Let us hear it....

I suppose I could but its really nothing that like, mechanically wrong with it because I have had it thoroughly checked out by a turbo specialist AXT Turbo in Dandenong, Victoria and took it to Nissan and had a full engine diagnostic done. Everything came up great and no dramas what so ever. I was just curious like they are the exact same ZD30 motor yeah? haha lol

Hmm ok. Well if it's the turbo that sounds different, and it's in the same vehicle....I would say that in your old engine where you got the whistle from may have been a loose fitting, around the turbo/exhaust, leaking air when spooling up. Now the new engine is good to go, everything is tight and not leaking under pressure.

I change the set up of my exhaust dependent of what I am doing, or depending how much tinkering I have done, and at various stages of the assembly the exhaust noises change.

My nav whistled with the original turbo. Hitachi

my new turbo doesn't at all. Different noise.
Both turbos have differently designed inlet comp wheels.

Check to see if your turbo is original. If not look at the wheel.

Some good pics of different designs.

Could be wrong but that's what im leaning towards, why mine sounds different.

Pretty sure the compressor wheels are different in the later models.

There's alot less failures in the newer ZD30's. Thats compressor failure I am refering to.

That's something that I've always wondered about with my '06 ZD30 D22 - it doesn't seem to make the whistle sound so common to other turbo diesels.

Cheers,

Russ

its funny this has come up. i own a 06 and the sound ur reffering to sounds fermilar like a hair dryer sound. but my dad is looking at buying a nav now and we took a 05 d22 on the wk end and it sounded different to mine it was actually a wissle noise and u could here it realy well.

with mine it dusnt start getting to a real noticeable whisle to about 2500rpm. ive recently checked the turbo it al seems ok

with the chipit unit installed and hitting sub 17psi my turbo with 1000km on it sounds mix between a old kettle and a vacuum cleaner.

old turbo was like an old kettle on acid.

Go figure, both seem to have similar power just different noise. As i said im leaving this to the design of the inlet comp wheels- different turbulence.
