Hi All -

Today I got a lesson in "blind spots" on my Navara. Having checked my surroundings twice, I promptly reversed in to a tree stump. Going a little faster than I should have, The damage is considerable and I'm looking at a nice repair bill.

I make myself feel better by telling myself that I'm not the first person to reverse my car into a stationary object LOL - but jokes aside there are some serious blind spots on the ute, and I'm seriously looking at getting a reversing camera installed.

I got the base model ST 2012 Auto Navara. Anyone here retro fitted a reversing camera to theirs? What are my options & associated ballpark costs?

Cost me about $70 and a couple hours of time. Pretty straight forward once you've worked it out. I mounted the monitor where the sunglasses holder is, ran the cable through the roof, down the pillar, along the sill and through the rear vent behind passenger side.

Get bother power sources from the rear left taillight reverse cable and earth to chassis.

I also have an 2012 d40 st auto

thanks for the replies -

I'm currently looking at both suggestions, as well as a third - a friend of mine got a wireless reversing camera & monitor. It negates the need to run power from the monitor back to the camera. Unsure as to reliability etc, still reading up.

I was in the nissan dealership the other day getting my 90k service and he suggested to me to go to JB HIFI and get the pioneer head unit. I ducked in and took a look - about $300 + fitting which isn't bad all things considered

I'd love to get the head unit, as it's cleaner / neater and less likely to get nicked. Hoping that the fat guy in the red suit will chip in.

Got the repairs quoted yesterday... Looking at a new tray, tailgate, chrome bumper. Merry Christmas?

Bah. Humbug.

Edit to add - where would you guys install the camera?

Went into JB Hi Fi yesterday to buy the pioneer head unit and reversing camera. The Head unit was marked at $327 with 30% off bringing the price down to $260, and I was chuffed that I was stealing a bargain.

It wasn't until the guy helping me made the comment, "Now, you're aware that if you have steering wheel controls, they won't work with the new head unit unless you buy a connector".

Bludy hell. Highway robbery at $150 for the additional connector I needed to ensure the headunit talks to my steering wheel controls.

So at this stage I look like I'm going with the face fix monitor - purely a cost decision.

What was the model number? Factory unit in my 2013 is breaking down, and of course Nissan is saying nothing is wrong with it...

Been looking at a new head unit with camera for a while

Another option is a GPS unit with a 'av
In' port. Lots of the navman units have this feature.
Wire a waterproof camera to the reverse lights then as soon as you select reverse it automatically switches the GPS unit into a reverse camera. All up cost about $180 and you get a GPS unit with lifetime map updates traffic alerts etc. Works for me.

Where did you run the AV Into the cab at?

My 2 cents
I put in a Pioneer double din DAB unit and a reverse camera. Works well. You can get a ISO harness (Autobarn had mine) which made it all plug and play.
You will need an antenna adaptor also.
The camera I mounted in the rear handle for a clean look.
I will be in Newcastle (Charlestown area) end of January if I can help with anything.
