i have a v6 outlaw auto and have been advised by a fellow outlaw owner to have my mapped as it makes the gear change much smoother and adds more horsepower , i like the idea of smoother gear change but doesnt more power mean more fuel, TBH id like to have some help in reducing fuel use. What thoughts do you guys have on my questions.

Petrol or diesel?

Petrol: there's no boost to play with but a change of fuel mapping (using a dyno) may produce some reasonable results. Very little experience with this though: most owners seem to have diesels.

Diesel: play time! There's a turbocharger involved, which is controlled by the ECU. You can have the fuel map changed (best done on a dyno) or add a chip. Diesel gas is an option, as is chipping it (proper chips like Chip It and Steinbauer, not the crap fakers like No Limits which only adjust the return voltage of the fuel rail pressure sensor). EGTs should be monitored if doing these mods.

The auto gearbox itself may require a service - that's something to talk to a auto transmission mob about. A warning about that though: I took mine to a small operator in Maitland NSW and was shafted badly, ended up having to replace the gearbox and he didn't want anything to do with it, denied all responsibility and left me around $10K out of pocket after we'd finished getting it back together again. Take it to a larger mob that have a reputation to uphold.

It's not the best advice for the following reasons..

The transmission is rated at 600nm, you already have 550 so you are closer to the limit.

Many have had problems with remaps, specifically fault codes.

99% of remappers drop in a map developed by somebody else. They don't build the remap on a rolling road as you would expect. Actually there are some reasonable remaps out there, certainly if you had a mainstream vehicle or VW Golf.

So the remap is not specific to your vehicle and will probably just be an increase in fuelling. You are spot on, the remap will hit fuel consumption.

To be honest, if you want economy, a 2.5T 230bhp (171kw) vehicle is not the best starting point. A light right foot and pure road tyres are probably the best way of getting improvements.

Thanks for that. My Mrs has the 2.5 and it returns 30mpg local. If I leave the mapping how can I get gearbox to change smoother from 1st to 5th. Dave

just keep in mind that increasing the fueling in a diesel only makes it consume more fuel IF you use the extra power. fuel consumption is more about how you drive.

I do expect it to be a lot its a v6 3l . I just want someway to ease gear change from 1st to 5th. My friend has a v6 and it's mapped/chipped and his gear change is very much smoother, can hardly feel it.

I do wonder exactly what you mean by "smoother". Are the shifts jerky in some way or what? A jerky gear shift can generally be rectified by either proper adjustment or replacing a dodgy solenoid or two. I've had vehicles in the past where I've cursed the appalling ratios used because it means some gears are close together, while others have large gaps. If this is the kind of thing you are talking about there's nothing you can do about it, other than replace the transmission with one that has been better designed.

As Old.Tony has already suggested, this is something to discuss with an auto transmission specialist. It's possible that nothing can be done about it but it's also possible that the transmission could benefit from a good service. Regardless, this is something you need their expertise for.
