In the older cars it was a warning light, usually came on as a result of one of the ABS rings getting muck in it, and usually one of the front ones as the bearings started to disintegrate and debris filled the teeth.
I am not sure about the newer cars, but if you have a section on your dash that indicates that all of the wheels are now actively being driven, I'd say the 4WD light is definitely a warning light.
