Hi all, hopping someone can help, i have a 2009 D40 STX, currently sitting at ZUPPS Aspley since the 09.03.2022 to have Nissan fix an issue. The problem is the car will not start unless it is hand primed while the car is being turned over. If you leave the vehicle for any period of time after starting it will not start and you have to repeat the whole process again. There is also the N.A.T.S and engine fault light is on constantly.

It is showing a high resistance fault (P2118) for the throttle body. Nissan have just informed me that they are unable to fix the issue as their efforts to diagnose has been unsuccessful. They have replaced the MAF sensor, suction control valve, primer pump, the batteries in the keys, and all the turbo hoses as they said there was a boost leak.

Surely this cannot be that hard, or am i missing something. The vehicle has 132,000 k's on the clock, serviced every 5000 k's and has never missed a bit since buying it.

Any ideas, wisdom or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I have been directed to remove the car by the end of next week.

Is there any chance you can get under the bonnet with a cab of electrical cleaner spray? Undo the wires clip on the throttle body, spray and replace..
it's the one on the driver side, end of the cold side intercooler hose, just under the engine cover

Do you know if the fuel filter has been replaced before the problem popped up?
When the Navs been left( say overnight) how many pumps on the primer bulb does it take until it gets noticeable harder to pump?
Both these questions relate to some type of possible fuel leak that may not be actually leaking, but letting air into the fuel lines to not allow full fuel pressure.
If somebody else installed the new maf sensor, SCV, boost lines and primer bulb - have the correctly refitted everything?
and lastly have you correctly cleared the code? and then retried?

N.A.T.S. = Nissan Anti Theft System??

As @MANNING suggested it sounds like fuel leak or air ingress.
But... the more info the better.
Any strange noises if/when it's running?
Can you smell diesel in the bay or back near the tank?
Does it have full power when it drives?
Battery healthy?

I think the very first thing you should do is prime the fuel filter.

Oh don't stop at 3-4 squeezes. Or 10. Just keep going.

Eventually you'll see diesel start to come out of the leak. Fix it. Try the car again.

Common faults:

* O-ring in water sensor not fitting properly, or some small amount of debris caught in it
* Hoses undertightened
* Hoses overtightened
* Hoses cracked
* Primer bulb perishing (I know this won't be it for you, it's just part of the list of common faults).

There's also a possibility that the pump is having difficulty drawing fuel through some blockage around the fuel pickup in the tank, and the primer bulb operation is helping to resolve this temporarily. Perhaps a bad batch of fuel, or some silt, or some algae - whichever, it would be an idea to check this too.

The easiest way to check: remove the filter end of the pickup hose that runs from the filter to the tank and undo the fuel cap. Blow into the hose. Reconnect, close tank, prime the fuel system and start it. Stop it. Start it again. Working? Pull the tank and clean it.

If it's still not working, there may be other issues at play.

Do you know if the fuel pump has ever been allowed to run dry (lots of cranking with no start, then a sudden start) ?

Has the car ever had unleaded petrol added to the tank?

Has the car been driven through (or stuck in) really deep water for an extended period (more than a minute) ?

Have you ever purchased fuel from a very small outlet with low turnover and possibly old tanks (small town with few visitors)?

Thanks for the advice, I am currently away working remote with limited connection.

So I have just had word from AVR Automotive at Brendale where the vehicle has been taken. They found a split hose pick-up, a faulty performance chip, and bad earth points on the fire wall and the ECU. These guys are good took Nissan over 2 months to say we cant fix it, AVR 3 hrs to diag and fix.

Thanks again.
