Hi All..
Have had a bit of a look around the site and online but uncertain which direction to go. I have been told I will be up for a new turbo at some point this year. If I have to do it I want to look at a stage one upgrade as it seems only a small difference in price to get a stronger turbo and added grunt. I will be going aftermarket as Nissan are just plain rude with pricing.

Is the job easy enough to do and how long or is it just easier to get someone to do?
What brands do you suggest I look at as I only want to do this once ?
And lastly is it worth the upgrade to a stage one or just stick to normal spec ?

Buy the way It's a 08 D40 Spain Auto.

If I have missed a thread that says it all please just put the link and I will chase it up.

All opinions and thoughts appreciated..
Cheers All 🤙

I always laugh when I hear people being told that they may need a turbo later on in the year.

If it has failed, it needs replacing. If not it doesn't. Those Garret turbos on the Navara are reliable and seldom fail.

The mechanics should be more honest and just ask you to buy them a new TV.

We bought a new genuine Honeywell Garrett GT2056V from a supplier in Brisbane who supplied the turbo (delivered) for about $1500. That was a couple of years ago now, so the price might be a little different, but they provided excellent service, advice and no mucking about.

My local mechanic installed it for me, I think they charged about $350 to do it.

Yes that got me a little to. May well do but just ask your mechanic on what basis/ why he thinks you will need a new turbo. Having said that they rarely last the life of the engine. Wondering what sort of K's you have on it and service interval.

^ And whether or not you do much towing, and how hard you push it, plus how long you wait for the turbo to cool after a hard run before shutting the engine down. These are all factors that affect the lifespan of a turbocharger.

Hey everyone.

Service History with the Nav is very good. Always serviced regularly every 7500klms. Vehicle has just under 2300000 on the clock
I don't do a lot of towing with it these days at most only 1500kgs at a time. Tray always has a little bit of weight in it due to dog gages and such on back and 60ltr water tank filled when traveling. Does not get driven overly hard at all and does a lot of hi way driving to get from A to B. very little around town /city driving. I Will let it sit for a few minutes after long drive to give a chance to cool. It does go off road but not hard enough to break it as its my daily as well.

I am looking at aftermarket turbos just due to the cost of a original as stated by Old Tony above. Have found a place in WA that can send me a aftermarket stage one upgrade overnight for less than a standard Nissan one and same as above around $400 to fit it by my Mechanic. So works out to $1500 fitted for a aftermarket stage one or $1000 for aftermarket standard spec turbo fitted.

This week the center bearing has gone in the last couple of days ( Hell of a squeal ) so replacing this week. Did look at a rebuild kit for it but I think a full replacement is a better idea.

A Nav specialist is who advised I would be needing a new turbo while in getting timing chains redone and alternator replaced ( Not my regular mechanic ) . Went there as could do both jobs cheaper than my mechanic could do just the Timing chains for.
Wish I could have bought a TV to fix it as it would have been easier.

I've just replaced mine in the last couple of days. I'll say at the start that it was an absolute pig of a job. Trying to get to, and later replace, the heat shield bolts was definitely the hardest part. If it hadn't been over the Easter period I would have preferred to pay the mechanic to do the job.

As for why I replaced it, mine decided to developed an incredible whistle and when my wife followed me down the road she reported that I was leaving a continuous trail of greyish smoke. It appears that something had gone wrong internally, which allowed some of the coolant to enter the exhaust. When I feel more enthusiastic I'll dismantle it and find out what happened.

I had a number of choices for the replacement:
  1. A "genuine" replacement, which is of course made by Garrett, not Nissan
  2. A rebuilt Garrett (a changeover really, as you have to bring back your old one to recover the deposit you leave on it)
  3. An after-market replacement
I'll never be wealthy enough to pay Nissan's prices, or indeed those of any other vehicle maker, so option 1 was out. Option 2 would have been $1,100 but none were available on short notice anyway. I settled on a CCT after-market turbo from Speedup Autoparts in Carrum Downs (Vic). They sell from the warehouse, and online, including eBay. I phoned them to ensure that ensure they had stock and was told they had plenty and was given a price of $900 for the high-flow model or $600 for the standard one, with a $50 discount for cash on either model. An hour later I was on my way back home with a brand new standard turbo. Given that I have the DTI power chip I decided I wasn't going to see the benefit of the high-flow model.
