I'm wondering do you have to replace timing chain on D40 ?? I have 2008 Spanish built at initial start up its not a rattle but a noise that lasts a couple of seconds never heard again till next Initial start. Im guessing it would wear eventually I have about 265K on it I think. Also does anyone know a good trustworthy person to do it if I need to in the Brisbane area please.
Thanks for any info as usual thanks so much for any help....

A brief rattle at the start might be the chains tightening up if the tensioners are getting a little sticky. It would be worth having an independent mechanic take a listen. That rattle could also be cold injectors (yep, we all got those!), a loose radiator fan (perhaps a cracked blade root? This has happened before) or a fuel pump that doesn't like the cold (not common).

If the tensioners are sticking it's probably gummed up with sludge, but you'd get a fair idea just by popping the oil filler cap and looking inside. If it's gummy up in there, the tensioners are likely full of it - and if it's clean up there, you might be ok. Tensioners do sometimes wear though, and it might be this that you're hearing. In this case, inspection is required and is not a simple task.

A second opinion is valuable. A third moreso, just to be sure. It's worth taking it to a diesel specialist, too - diesels are different beasties to petrol, in spite of the many similarities there are things like this that are perculiar to diesels.

Yes, my car is a 2009 diesel (359,000km now). My bike's petrol, so I'm familiar with both - although the bike is a whole lot quieter than the Nav!

Which reminds me, I have to do the plugs on my bike, and do a brake bleed ... oh the fun to be had!

Again mate thank you for the reply Im not sure so I got her booked in next week to have it replaced but unfortunately I can only get the standard chain fitted due to price double row $2800 I just dont have now $2080 for standard but will give me a bit of confidence in her anyhow....

It's doesn't take long to get the timing cover off so it's worth getting it checked. At 265000km it would be worth checking.

I had my D40 in for a new clutch and had the timing chain checked while it was there. The reason I asked was because the timing chain was noisy. The vehicle had 150,000km on the clock. Once he had the front plastic cover off I checked it as well as the second opinion. The gap between the chain side plates was greater than the maximum specified of 0.5mm. Many were out to about 0.7mm.

So I bit the bullet and had the dual row kit fitted. I bought it from here: YD25

Thanks Scott for reply I Have it booked in next Thursday at Trade Mechanical on the Gold Coast so she should be fine for a while as I said I wanted double row but right now I just cant afford it so the standard is better than whats in it and should last a few years before needing doing again. Yes the next thing will be the clutch then she is good for a while.

Engine House Australia are the ones in the know if your in Brisbane. Located in Ipswich. Great guys and well priced from what i've been quoted. Going in on the 17th march for timing chain. They also do the crank seal and all other seals around included in the price. $1780 and half a day. There is nothing these guys don't know about a Nav.
