Hi folk, a newbie here. I have a 2012, STX 550 with a whining diff. Can I replace it with any Navara diff or must it be a 550 Diff? thanks, Mark

Physically yes, but it has a different ratio, so practically no.
Thanks mate. I will look for a specific one then. Cheers. BTW, what is the difference in ratio and what effect would it have on performance etc.?
You'd have to match the front diff too, or 4WD will not be very comfortable.

You may be able use another D40 diff if you swap over the ring and pinion gear. However it is not that easy with diffs as it's probably the ring and pinion that is shot. It's not as easy as even buying a new or good second hand centre even with the right ratio ring gear. You can get lucky but really they have to be shimmed in or the lap of the of gear tooth face may make contact on the leading or trailing end of the tooth. Thus even with a new ring gear giving you that whine that your trying to get rid off. There is no short cuts with diffs.
Thanks gents, I have booked it in to a diff repair centre to have them rebuild it. Here's hoping. Only $1200 not including ring gears and pinion. Otherwise $$$$$? Mark
