HI there
I have a 2014 d22 with yd25 engine,190,000 k's. Has just started to very occasionally go into limp mode. Usually first thing after sitting overnight but have noticed recently that it seems to happen if left idling for a while. No engine light and doesn't run rough just a lack of power, turning the engine off, and restarts and runs fine. Fuel economy seems about the same,no obvious fuel leaks or smell of diesel and no other symptoms. All filters and servicing is up to date. Would just like a few ideas before taking it into a diesel mechanic.
Any help is appreciated
cheers

At a guess I'd say it's a typical set of symptoms of a dirty/damaged SCV (it's on the fuel pump, one electrical connector and two torx bolts and it's off).

Cheap things to try: loosen (do not remove, but at least one full turn) the fuel cap. If this resolves the problem, it's definitely the SCV. Also, either a Liqui Moly Diesel Purge or a good run with some decent injector cleaner in the tank may reduce the symptoms - so it's still the SCV - but if the SCV was only dirty, you might remedy the whole thing doing this.

If it's the SCV - it's about 15 minutes' work to replace it.

Thanks Tony, loosen fuel cap while in limp mode or straight away and see if it happens again? Will also grab some diesel purge today and chuck it in.

Loosen the cap any time you like, then see if the problem comes back with a loose cap.

No, the loose cap is NOT a fix. It simply masks the symptom (sometimes - this trick doesn't always work).

No probs will try that, have just added some liqui moly diesel cleaner as well so will see how we go. Will let you know. Cheers 👍🏼

Hi Tony
Tried the liquid moly through the fuel and loosened the fuel cap but no good. Has started to play up more lately but still after it’s been idling only. Fuel economy has slowly been getting worse lost close to KLM a liter. Got it booked in next week to be looked at. Was looking around the web read somewhere that any broken sensor could throw it into limp mode? Curious because one of the wires for the water sensor on the bottom of the fuel filter is broken. Broken off right at the base so can’t re-attach it. Any possibility this could cause it?

I can't say "no" definitively because I don't know which way the water sensor operates. Sensors like the Neutral Position Switch work by becoming active when in neutral, so a broken wire (or just disconnecting the sensor) makes the car believe it's in gear so it doesn't inhibit turbo operation etc - in other words, a faulty sensor is not an issue for the ECU.

However, a general rule of thumb - if something's broken, fix it and see what happens. This is the kind of thing you could obtain from a front-end wreck, cut the harness and cut the plug off yours then solder the wires together appropriately (use heatshrink to protect the solder joints).

Thanks Tony, had in at mechanics today and he said he wouldn’t touch it as he previously worked on one with same fuel pump code replaced scv and some other stuff but didn’t fix the problem so ended up $800 down as he didn’t charge customer. Referred me to local diesel specialist who are expensive but not much choice. Can’t get hold of a sensor for fuel filter so got to buy whole assembly, tossing up whether to try this first or not,,it’s around $380. Will keep you posted.👍🏼

POO89 Fuel pressure is too much higher than the target value
the book says possible cause are,
• Fuel pump
• Air mixed with fuel
• Lack of fuel
• Fuel rail pressure sensor

i don't know if they have fuel lift pump in the tank or just suction. i would fit clear fuel hose after the filter and check for air bubbles.
the other thing i've seen is to clear the fuel data after fuel filter is changed.
if that is all ok i would then look at fuel pressure sensor, do the cheap easy stuff first.

the sensor on the filter is just a water sensor. good to have but it doesn't bring up codes at all.

Cheers mate, good to know about the water sensor will save myself $380 there. Almost ordered the kit yesterday, glad I didn’t. I’ll have a look at the other stuff, don’t have much patience when it comes to mechanics but then the cost otherwise might lead me to gaining some.😅👍🏼

I would do the Scv and rail pressure sensor togeather as a pair. Is easy DIY jobs , then do a fuel pump reset. See how ya go, suggest you do new fuel filter and a drop of fuel doctor. I would put some straght in the filter as you go..

Cheers mate
Yeah had a look at the fuel pressure sensor yesterday, took the plug from ecu off and had a look. Turned ignition on and checked voltage as the wires were bent badly and was wondering if broken on inside, they read 5volts. I think I heard the fuel pump whirring away as well. Plugged it back in and started engine, was running fine but checked codes and it threw a P003 at me,low fuel pressure. Cleared it so will see what happens. Will buy a new sensor and replace and will have a look at the scv as well. Fuel filter was done 10,000 klms ago, replace anyway?
