I have a td 6 speed manual d40. I have been having problems getting it into first gear. When the car is not moving just sitting at idle, when i try to push it into gear it is really hard and takes a couple of tries before it will go into gear. It doesn't make any grinding noise. but if the car is rolling it seems to just slip straight into gear and all the other gears are fine. It happens on and off its not all the time and it doesn't matter what the temperature of the day is it just does it when it feels like it. has anyone had this problem or know whats causing it.

hey mate could be a few things;

your first gear synchro in your gear box could be badly worn, which means it may need to be replaced. or it sounds like either your clutch is wearing out or you need to re-bleed it!

do you notice any slipping of your clutch when your driving?

also, check your master cylinder for any leaks, you will need to replace it if its leaking and get your lines bled.

good luck!

hey thank for the reply

my clutch isn't slipping, i had it replaced in november last year, i would have to have a proper look at the master cyclinder but i don't think its leaking. if it is the synchro in first gear is there any way i can check this myself and is i hard to replace or would i be better to take it to a gearbox place to be looked at.

as far as i know you cant check them, ive never had a go at doing synchros but im sure you could find a write up on the internet somewhere, if your not handy on the tools then just take it to a specialist. the site doesnt tell me your location but if your in brisbane i couldnt speak highly enough of steve from diff and gearbox industries.

best of luck!

Hi Guys,I know this is an old thread so just taking a chance. I have the same problem on the same model, manual 6 speed. first gear and reverse gears are a problem. sometimes I switch off the car just to put them on gear. Besides the master and slave cylinders that I plan to remove, would there be any other problem?

Could be but unlikely. Sound like your not getting enough release on the clutch. Master and slave are pretty easy to do. Another trick is stick it in first or reverse and hold your foot down on the clutch for on a level surface. If it creeps forward or back odds on your Master or Slave is bypassing fluid.

Try sticking it in say 4th or 5th first. Then first if it doesn't go into say 5th or 4th. odds on it is clutch release problems if it does it could be gearbox related problem.
