you would need to contact the computer programmer/manufacturer

thats what controls the trans

trans just does what its told

i remember reading somewhere that you can buy a tuning box that overrides the signal from the trans ecu

If its programming then someone who can speak the language used should be able to re-write the software.

Easier said then done, I have email dozens of auto specialist shops even Unichip (cause they make chips for Commodore autos) and no one can or will help.

Does anyone know the model of the gearbox? I know you can get stand alone ecm for the engine as it's used in many models of vehicles.

G'day.
Sorry if I am a bit slow to understand how/what you are trying to do this modification.
Maybe I need to see raptorthumper in person (both of us are living in Paradise).

Yep still living the dream in this dust hole ISA. I'm happy to give you a demonstration of how it works one night or weekend.

dont they come with "Down Hill Assist" or "Down Hill Desent" im sure they do i know the new BT50 and Rangers have that function, maybe you should ask nissan if they have a desent assist feature.

When I set out to buy my D40, I read all the road tests I could find, and I admit I was interested in the extra power and torque of the V6 550 model. What I did NOT like was the fact that in every off-road test, they criticised the auto trans and one magazine said that it was useless for anything slightly serious in the bush. The comment was made that if they had fitted the Nissan auto instead, there would not have been a problem.
If perhaps they release the 550 in a manual transmission, I will re consider, but for now the manual D40 is just fine.

If i had the choice id be getting a 550...so much power and with raptorthumpers mod it would be amazing...but mine is fun and i prefer a manual anyway

$15 dollars in switches and wires and you can fix this behaviour.

Do we know what kind of plugs are on the transfer case, and can we purchase something so that we have something like this:

original wire from car-> original plug ->new socket -> wiring change -> new plug -> original socket on transfer case

That would allow it to be easily reversed. Can we source those plugs from somewhere? I don't have a 550 so I can't be sure about them and I'm not sure if Lladnar would like me crawling around under his car.

I'm fairly confident all transfer case actuators on all D40's are the same, so that means the same connector. Don't know who the manufacturer or what the part number's are though.

why are all you guys not doing this mod?
It seems easy enough and obviously solves the problem of up shifting.
I just dont understand why all of you guys havnt given it a crack, if i had i a 550 i know it would be one of the first things i would do.
The other good thing about it besides how cheap it is to do, is how easy it is to UNDO if you dont like it or it doesnt work the way you want.

That's why I'm curious about the plugs/sockets. If we can manufacture something that is plug-and-play, people might jump at it - the current solution requires some wire-cutting and some soldering and not everyone's comfortable with oxy-acetylene and plasma cutters.

Might have to crawl under mine and see if I can't knock something up, we can test it on Lladnar's truck. Don't need it on mine, I don't have the fancy "omg I am soooooo confused about what we're doing here" gearbox.

Been quite a while since I've been here and a fair bit has been happening but no good result as yet. I am tempted to buy switches / wires but while still going through stuff with Nissan I don't want to have traces of wires being soldered, etc.

So far Nissan have tried to alter the G force sensor, no change in behaviour and the dealer admitted he wasn't expecting any but had to follow what Nissan required him to do and then told me that there was no other solution.

I spoke with NSW Dept Fair Trading, they put me onto the NSW Consumer, Trader and Tenancy department. Their guidelines are that each party to a dispute must listen to the other party, put their points forward and have suggestions on how to settle the dispute. I have been following these steps and done everything in writing as much as possible and following phone calls have followed up the phone call with a summary of the conversation which has taken place.

Outcomes to date:

They have listened to me, I have listened to them. I think they listen to words, not to the problem. I feel like I am talking to a wall and a robot is answering me. They certainly do not understand the dangerous implications that this issue could have to those of us who use them for 4wding in anything other than level terrain.

I have put forward all my points including some info gained from here regarding what their own vehicle handbook says. Their point basically boils down to "it is what it is".

AS far as making suggestions on how the dispute be resolved I have offered a few alternatives such as installation of downhill descent control (not that I like electronic gadgets doing my driving for me) as fitted in the Pathfinders with the same engine and who don't suffer the same issue through to buying back the vehicle at a price that allows for the use I have had from the vehicle since I purchased it. Nissans suggestion is that I put up with it, in other words, they have no suggestion as to how to resolve a dispute.

The next step is to lodge a complaint with the department. Those whom I have spoken to there seem to think that because I have followed their advice and Nissan have not, there is a good chance a determination will be made in my favour. I just don't know what that will be. I do love the car, fantastic in all respects other than that one little issue. Any other twin cab style vehicle just won't be as good in so many other areas but at least they should be safe to drive.

Good on you for following up the matter.

I also realise i dont own a 550 and there for my D40 doesnt suffer the same issue, BUT if i had to go through all the pointless visits to Nissan and call all the government bodies and in the mean time still be unhappy with my car i would just spend the few dollars on some wire and switches and do the mod that already has been done and proven to work like a treat.

After all we do all sorts of other mods to make the car more suitable for what we want so why not this mod after all its way cheaper the , Suspension, Tyres, bash plates , bar work snorkels, ect ect

Sorry guys i just dont see the point in NOT doing this mod, i would just look at it like all the other mods we do.

Good on you for following up with the CTTT.

I also understand no one really wants to pay $55-60k for a car then start splicing wires etc to make the transmission work as it should.

Pitty your troubles 550V6. Best of luck, but Nissan are a bunch of morons to deal with.... Guess that's why the have to sell their cars so cheap.....

so why wire up spotties?? we do that because the lights are inadequate, why do a suspension lift?? we do that because the suspension doesnt work as good as we think 4x4's should and we want more performance out of our cars,
BUT because every 4x4 from any manufacturer is the same no one questions those mods.
IMO this mod is just like any other mod, it will make the car perform more to what suits our needs, ma and pa kettle who just tow there Jayco to the van park dont care about the low range not holding gears down a 45' slope so they dont need this mod, BUT if you do want to go do that then this simple fix will solve the issue.
So whats the problem??
If you cant do it your self then get and auto electrician to do it and make it look like a factory installed set up.
Companies like "Wholesale transmissions" make a good living out of 4x4 owners wanting more from their autos, so why is the 550 any different??

This mod is not like any other mod, it means Nissan get away with producing a unsafe & unsuitable vehicle which breaks most of the basic rules of 4wding and there own set of guide lines to safe use of a 4wd and no one is going to do a thing about it. Nissan is flipped a great big **** you at us.

I wish the idea to modify was mine. I'd have a PNP unit produced and selling by now. Then anyone could do it.
Feck Nissan, they don't and won't care.
