Hi there all, new to all this. I have a 2006 YD2.5 d40, it’s done 290,000kms but after a few modes is still running good, apart from a bit of blow by and an eye watering exhaust smell, I have changed the turbo as it failed due to the mechanic putting the oil feed line to turbo gasket in backwards so wasn’t draining back to sump. I’ve also just put on a 3” with muffler pipe and snorkel, it doesn’t loose water and no oil leaks. I am going to put a catch can on as doesn’t have one and oil going into hot pipe so after cleaning pipes and intercooler don’t want to do it again, I am using 10w40 nulon full synthetic oil ( should I go thicker?) or is there an additive I can use? Pictures to come . Thanks in advance for any help.

opps, didn't answer your question. Never been a fan of additives in the sump. Unless the engine is really on it's way out. As for viscosity 10w~40 should be enough. In summer maybe 15~40. Keep in mind the low number is important for cold starts. Thinner it is the faster it flows and cold starts is where most of the wear is done.

Looks great.
I'm at around 200,000ks and still using the same 5w/30 since it was new and still seem to be pulling out the same amount as I put in. Unless it's burning a reasonable amount, I wouldn't be changing from the specified grade. There will always be some blow by.

As above.

@Tappet - that's a Snugtop. Same as mine, very nice. The locks aren't perfect, need to regas the struts a bit too, and the interior light in mine shit itself but other than that it's an awesome canopy.

@Frosty: nice car. At 290,000km it's only just run in, mine's done 345,000km now (lockdowns have kept us at home) and it's not experiencing what I'd consider excessive blow-by.

Yes that gasket was in backwards, oops! The oil is pumped in to the turbo under pressure by the oil pump but it returns to the engine via gravity (so if you roll the car and land on the roof it's probably not going to go far).

As the others said, I wouldn't change the oil grade unless you were spending winter in the alps/Tasmania.

Thanks for the feedback and comments 👍. Yeah my light in the canopy isn’t there, the wiring is, only putting out 6 volts so presuming it was LED like the tail light. I had to change the tail light on the canopy as that shit itself, got it of a rodeo at the wreckers. Couldn’t find an original. Does the job. 345,000kms Tony, I’ll keep it a bit longer then👍.
