Gday
Long term reader first post.
Recently brought my 2014 d40 navara with 140kms on the clock.
Had a full front to back service and inspection done by the local mechanic and got the all clear but……
It has this nasty whine, I’ve ran it with the belts off etc and it’s still there, I’m gathering will have to get the timing chains done. Has anyone just done the normal single chain kit? Is it worth paying the extra for the duplex kit?
I have a video of it and trying to upload it here.
im located in casino nsw
cheers
Andreg

Hello Andreg are you sure it’s the timing chain ?
‘it’s strange how sound travels from diffs and gearbox’s.
I read here timing chains lasting a long time.
just asking :) good luck

I'm hearing a sound that changes pitch almost in time with the engine speed, so I'm thinking it's either a leak in the exhaust system (look for sooty emissions around the exhaust, particularly the manifold-turbo interface but also the EGR tube) or it's mechanical and either turbocharger or timing chain.

Could you identify more closely where the sound is coming from? It doesn't seem to start until you revved the motor the first time, but is then apparent from that moment onwards. A mechanic's stethoscope would be helpful if the sound is coming from the front of the engine, listen before and after the revving.

Timing chains in these can fail, and usually a result of the tensioner not doing its job and THAT might be caused by something preventing the tensioner from moving freely (like something gumming it up).

Thanks for your knowledge tony, I’ve made Contact with YD25 on the Gold Coast and the car is going there, the sound is defiantly coming from behind the timing chain cover wilst running it with both belts off. Will update when I get the outcome..
