    outlaw mapping

I do wonder exactly what you mean by "smoother". Are the shifts jerky in some way or what? A jerky gear shift can generally be rectified by either proper adjustment or replacing a dodgy solenoid or two. I've had vehicles in the past where I've cursed the appalling ratios used because it means...

    Limited Slip Diff??

For those wondering about LSD vs traction control, the two are not mutually exclusive. Traction control is used to assist traction and is very easily and cheaply implemented because it's nothing more than a bit of programming in the ABS computer. As ABS based traction control (no matter what...

    Limited Slip Diff??

Just a thought... Some brands label the filler plug to help identify an LSD, so that the person about to top up or refill the oil knows what kind of oil to use. I don't know whether or not Nissan does this.

    Limited Slip Diff??

A on-LSD will do the same.

    Limited Slip Diff??

The wrong oil will make the diff behave as a non-LSD. If your model has an LSD but is not behaving accordingly, I'd suggest draining the oil out of it and refilling it with LSD oil. Putting LSD oil into a non-LSD will not harm it, so it's a safe thing to try.

    Voltage Sensing Relay (VSR) question

All I can say about that is that we have very different notions about what constitutes suitably heavy cabling.

DIY - Installation of Remote Exhaust Cut-out

OK, what we used to call a de-corking system, except we used to do that with a mechanical lever. More than once I was asked what the second "gear level" in my sedan was for.

    What is this part

Interesting concept, except that then you'll not only subject yourself to the charge of modifying the anti-pollution system, you could also face fraud charges. You just need to come across that one cop in a hundred that is actually aware of these things.

DIY - Installation of Remote Exhaust Cut-out

Exactly what is its function and why did you do it?

    What is this part

For clarity, the photo taken from the from of the car does have the EGR valve circled. The photo taken from the side has the throttle body circled. On my model at least, there is a butterfly valve inside the throttle body. The EGR valve is a pollution control device and plays no part in the...

    Voltage Sensing Relay (VSR) question

While technically true, when that voltage drop is in the order of just a few millivolts, which is less than the error reading of the kind of multimeter available to most people, it can be considered to not exist.

    D40 and D23 Rims

It happens with some makes and models that certain wheels are interchangeable, while others are not. Even when the stud pattern is the same, the diameter and offset match, there can be issues such as clearance around the brakes. I'd suggest that rather than relying on answers to such a broad...

    Voltage Sensing Relay (VSR) question

Just keep in mind that too little might possibly miss the mark, whereas too much is easily ignored. ;)

    Voltage Sensing Relay (VSR) question

I have mine installed under the tray, with only about 250mm of cable between it and the batteries (I have 2 x deep cycle). As Old.Tony indicated above, the key to making this work properly is to ensure you use large cables. This simply cannot be overemphasized. A comparison can be drawn with...

    What is this part

I'm no expert and don't have one of those models but that sure looks like a throttle body to me. The big clues are the hose bringing in the air from the intercooler and the pipe from the crankcase ventilation system.

    Can’t find dipstick

True, not impossible but there's a world of difference between possible and practical. In theory, it's not impossible for me to become the Prime Minister one day but here in the real world, that's never going to happen (even if I was a big enough prick to want it). My main concern about this...

    Can’t find dipstick

While that's true, I'm pretty sure the fluid being black, or close to it, is a fair way to judge that it's past its use-by date.

    Voltage Sensing Relay (VSR) question

The bloke across the road from us replaced the batteries in his new caravan with LiFePO4. He now has vastly greater capacity and can draw much higher currents (and for longer) and saved a lot of weight, all while using the same amount of space. If only I'd had that option when I got the...

    Can’t find dipstick

I had a very similar situation in a car years ago. When I got it the transmission fluid was of distinctly dark grey colour and the transmission would sometimes misbehave. Automatic transmissions are one of the few things I won't work on, so I took it to a transmission specialist. They said the...

    Can’t find dipstick

Quite right, as they will generally trade them in every 2 or 3 years and certainly won't put many Ks on them. New car buyers have no notion of the things we old car buyers treat as routine maintenance, like transmission and brake fluid changes, timing belts/chains, water pumps, etc., etc. I've...
