That's a tidy looking half tub.

    D21 Alternator

G'day Mikel, If you're saying that voltage drops to 12.4 when you're using the starter motor, I would think that's fine considering the load you're putting on the battery. A good battery should show 12.5 to 13.7 volts after sitting overnight, and while charging voltages can reach 14.4 volts +/-...

    Interesting instrument cluster.

Whoever wrote '88-9 D21 Navara on this cluster, long time ago, must'a picked up the wrong one. The one pictured, is for '83-6 Datto 720, I discovered, after pulling my cluster out to do a comparison. I should'a recognised it, I had a 720, twenty or thirty years ago.

    Interesting instrument cluster.

Has anyone ever come across this type instrument cluster in a D21? It's marked as '88-'89 D21 Navara.

    Limited Slip Diff??

Thank you, I am now less un-educated on this particular set of acronyms, I'd still rather not have them, except maybe ABS, but then I haven't had a need for ABS in a long time. But, it still doesn't alter the fact that, if you're on slippery grass and both wheels are spinning, an LSD, no matter...

    Limited Slip Diff??

You've not mentioned your vehicles having ABD (Automatic Brake Differential) which, and again I'm making an un-educated guess, is supposed to take the place of an LSD, but by braking the spinning wheel. But, if both wheels are spinning at the same speed, ABD is useless, and an LSD is not going...

    Limited Slip Diff??

Just out of interest, when you're attempting these grassy slopes, is it one wheel spinning or both? If it's both, your only choices are grippier tyres and/or a couple of bags of sand in the back, or trade it on a 4X4. Redbook says ABS (Antilock Brakes), Automatic Brake Differential, Brake...

    Viscous fan hub

And if you're really concerned about it overheating, get an "Engine Watchdog", pretty easy to fit and have a settable alarm.

    Viscous fan hub

Only takes about 100 metres to spread the oil around the hub, and then it will spin freely, 'til it gets hot. I'm talking cold, from sitting overnight! Go out one morning, lift the bonnet, if the fan is hard to turn, leave the bonnet up, make sure you're in neutral with the handbrake on, door...

    Viscous fan hub

The fan should be stiff when it's cold, because the cold oil has settled to the bottom of the hub, just listen to any Nissan with a viscous fan taking off from cold, sounds like it's revving its' ring out because the fan's locked up, frees up a bit and settles down when the oil starts moving...

    Are drive shafts interchangeable

You could try searching the chassis number of your D21 here. parts catalog NISSAN [Australia (right wheel)], original catalog NISSAN [Australia (right wheel)], online catalog NISSAN [Australia (right wheel)], Car catalog NISSAN [Australia (right wheel)] And the vin/chassis number of your D22...

    Low compression on one pot.

Compression test, with oil down the hole, has pretty much proven a piston/rings problem Paul. But speaking of tdc, do these computer controlled engines still have a timing mark somewhere?

    Low compression on one pot.

That's what I was wondering about Tony, Americans reckon a soak with Sea Foam will do the trick, but it's a bit thin on the ground here. With a bit of DuckDuckGoing I found SF is roughly 4 parts diesel, 2 parts naphtha and one part isopropanol. The diesel's easy, brake cleaners and shellite are...

    Low compression on one pot.

Definitely rings or piston, oil down the hole bumped compression up to 100psi.

    Low compression on one pot.

Due to budget blowout on 10 x 5m worknexe for the side of my bus, and the rather inconvenient demise of my hws, I've had a lot of time to think about why the S1 VN V6 in my D21 has lost compression on No. 5, 75psi compared to 150psi for 1 + 3. No's 2,4 and 6 are still in the too hard basket...

    Massive overheat.

Could be lack of air flow, if you were travelling slower than usual. If so, and your model still has one, the first thing I'd be looking at is the viscous fan hub. Check for oil on the shaft, and after sitting, cold, overnight there should be a fair amount of resistance when you try to turn it...

Canvas tonneau cover/tray covers, recomendations anyone?

Robert Exell, (West Vic Canvas, 40 Cromie St Rupanyup, 0427 855 030), been doing it for over 40 years, so knows what he's talking about. He knocked up a canvas cover for my 720, about 30 years ago, fitted perfect. I wouldn't go anywhere else for a canvas job, even if I didn't get "mates rates".
