D40 Alternator Bolt.

Hey guys,

Trying to undo the bottom bolt on my D40s alternator. Won't budge even with WD40. Just checking it's normal thread? Or am I just a Gumby?

My mechanic (because I couldn't do it either) said he had to use a 1-metre breaker bar.

As far as I'm aware it's a normal-threaded bolt. I assume that Nissan hired the Incredible Hulk and gave him a spanner.

Yep. I've decided that all I can do is remove the fan shroud andnmy impact might fit

I was roadside, at night and in the rain... NOT to take anything away from your situation.. It was a proper pain and at the time i thought it might just be easier to torch the bloody thing..

Finally it gave have a little with a bigger extension on the bar i was using and not long later the alternator was replaced..

Can you either soak it again or try with some heating?
Normal threaded is a fact..
not sure off the top of my head but one of the nuts takes tension so you can install the belt - maybe its the one your struggling with and need to lock it better in place?
 
Yeah has been soaking overnight. Can't get the real torch into it. Maybe a pencil torch. Off to buy a breaker bar today. Will start on it late afternoon. Will let you guys know.
 
Ok so after much stuffing around. And buying more expensive tools eg 900mm breaker it is off!

Removed it and it's bearing. Places new bearing on. BUT I have one question. What do I do with this part?

That's the dust cap you push onto the end of the pulley. There's a groove it snaps into. It covers the end of the shaft but will eventually shed the middle and look like the old overrun pulley.

Same guy ‘torqued’ half the bell housing bolts on my D40 that I’m at war with atm.
 
a min 600mm breaker bar should be in everyones tool kit, especially with cars like ours getting up in years!

Hey, yes I agree. I have limited access to people I can borrow off. And money. But I did go and buy one.
 
Ok lower fan shroud back in place. Running and driving well around town.

Couldn't get the radiator under tray thing back in. Any pics of this just to make sure I'm doing it right.

I'm not the best at this stuff. But I give it a go. Thank you everyone for all the help 😊
 
Hey, yes I agree. I have limited access to people I can borrow off. And money. But I did go and buy one.
Tools can be expensive mate, There are certain ones you shouldn't really skimp on to be honest. A breaker bar? Supercheap Auto and the cheapest one will do the job for most home DIY! no need to splurge on that unless you're using it a fair bit.

I have a Sydney tools nearby (which is pretty good for a regional area) so I bought a 900mm bar from their cheap range. Was close to $120. But will last.
