Hi everyone, I have a 2012 pathfinder with the yd25 I have just replaced the cylinder head and oil cooler and was going to service the transmission as I use it to tow while under the car I noticed it is a sealed unit, I have noticed it has a cap with 2 10mm bolts where dipstick is on other models and wondering if I change oil pan with one that is used with dipstick and install a dipstick would this work? Any info on this would be great.
Regards

I have a dim memory of the dip stick in my RE5 being attached under the cap held down by a 10mm bolt.

The manual agrees with my memory but that's for a 2009 model (and 2010).

However, the manual for the 2012 model shows that they changed the RE5 box to use the charge pipe from underneath. I thought that was a bit ... ordinary.

It may be possible for you to change over - it's not something anyone here has talked about that I can recall (but then there's a reason for the "Old" in my name). It would be worth looking at how your filler pipe connects to the box (take pics?) and take those pics to a wrecker and see if the bits look similar.

Thanks for the reply old Tony, I was looking at the diagram of a box with the dipstick and that's how I found the cap with the 2 10mm bolts in same location as where dip stick was. I've been trying to find out more about it but haven't had much luck.
What do you mean by a charge pipe?

The newer RE5 gearbox is filled on a hoist from underneath the vehicle using a special (Nissan-specific) tool called a "charge pipe" which connects to the filler hole under the gearbox. The new method is to (from empty) pump in a certain quantity of oil (at 40 degrees celcius) into the gearbox and then remove the charge pipe and watch how much oil flows back out. When the oil (still at 40C) only drips very slowly, the gearbox is full.

Please, do not ask which Nobel prize winner thought that one up, because (in my opinion only) it's so bloody silly it was probably developed by someone who'd had one too many cones (and not the traffic variety).

Yes we'll they are the people who sit behind a desk thinking they know how to design cars😤 they design cars now so we can't service things ourselves money hungry stealers they are

Sealed-for-life transmissions are controversial.
The 7 speed unit behind the V9X Nav's is supposed to be sealed-for-life too.

I'm not sure about compatibility with a dipstick pan....but if there's a way you can dump the fluid and replace the filter & re-fill, I'd do it.
Especially if it's a regular tow vehicle with high mileage.
@Old Tony might have good info about this, I think he's been towing with a YD25 automatic for years....(??)

That's a possible reason (making home servicing more difficult).

We either all know, or have heard of, the guy who's too bloody stupid to give a spanner to, that still wants to do his own stuff and invariably ends up with a huge bill for fixing the things he's broken while attempting to do something simple. Not everyone has a hoist at home, and a guy like this is quite unlikely to invest in one (try justifying that to your wife, eh?).

They may also want to make money selling parts.

Just in case anyone wants to try, here's an idea.

Not perfect info about the newer boxes, because I don't have one, but when they came out it was quite a talking point. If memory serves, one guy made a replacement (not perfect but workable) out of a garden hose.

As for towing ... yeah we slowed down a lot since the Batpox (TM) came out. We managed one trip around NSW and a handful to Bathurst for the races and that's all.

Things are picking up again though, we just did Challenge Bathurst and we're putting the final touches to our Christmas trip (again, NSW, but still clocking about 3,000km for the trip). The 12 Hour (early Feb '23) will come shortly after our return then I've got the Newcastle 500 and the Bathurst 6 Hour at Easter.

Bathurst trips do tax the vehicle, there are some significant climbs between here and there. There's also considerable road damage from the rains, destroying a fair amount of the Bylong Valley Way which we use as a shortcut that also knocks out several steep climbs, so for a few months (at least) we're going to do things the long(er) way via Mudgee.

380,000km on the old girl at the moment and she's still going strong.
