I'm putting an egr blocking plate in my d40 my question is I can't afford to install a catch can at the minute how long after can I install one before trouble developing?.TIA
 
Arguably, if you can only afford one, the catch can should be fitted first.
But others may have a different (valid) opinion on that.

As for trouble. How long is a piece of processed cotton? How many kms on the donk? How much blow-by does it already have?

The catch can & the EGR are complimentary mods. But are not necessarily reliant on each other.
With the EGR blocked, and no catch can, the engine will no longer receive a dose of exhaust gas via the inlet. And the risk of coolant leaking into the inlet stream is greatly reduced, or removed completely, depending on how much EGR removal you do.

But the engine will still be ingesting any oil vapour produced by the CCV system until you fit a C/C.
This means T/C, intercooler pipes/hoses, intercooler and inlet manifold all collect oily residues.
....and a catch can doesn't completely remove these residues, it just catches most of them.

Lots of diesels getting around without a catch can. They didn't come factory with one.
at your earliest convenience is the answer mate..
Depending on how oily things are will depend on the amount of clean up when you get the catch can installed or even how far you decided to take it

Thanks Barney B for the the info i'll take it on board I think I'll wait till I can get a catch can
 
If
I bought one from ebay and it was about $30 for the catch can. it works a treat mate.

You don't need to outlay a lot for a simple contraption.

Here it is - Oil Catch Breather Can Kit Universal Petrol Filter Baffled Diesel Reservoir Tank | eBay

I just used some better hose than what came with the kit.

You can add your own filter medium to an ebay can. Scotchbrite scouer pad or steel wool are some examples.
Just needs lots of surface area to allow the oil to condense on.
