Hi, I bought my son a 1998 Nissan Navara. 6 months after it started making a slight popping noise when first started then slightly started blowing white smoke, however when out on the road runs fine. Over the last few weeks it has seemed to get a bit worse and he said it seems to sound a bit ruff whilst out on the road now. It's a 4 cylinder diesel. We assumed it was the injectors so we replaced them yesterday but didn't help at all. Was blowing tons of white smoke straight after maybe even seemed worse.

It doesn't use water or oil and doesn't over heat. Just running a bit ruff and blowing white smoke.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks for your reply. They say it's not glow plugs as car starts perfectly fine. Yes it has a turbo but it also has been tested and is good.

Also done a compression test as was gonna pull out and rebuild assuming it was something bad. But all cylinders have the same compression

Could be gaskets on the air intake manifold when it comes to that popping noise which may have been damaged after removal to put the Injectors in, white smoke sounds like Glow Plugs to me. These should be changed every 100 000 -150 000 Km anyway and have you checked the exhaust pipe for any cracks ?.

Angiep I have two D22’s both with QD32 motors, a Ute and a dual cab. The Ute has done 397,000kms and does a similar thing to what you are describing on start up.
It starts easily but as it’s warming up it bellows massive amounts of white smoke and I need to raise the idle to around 2000rpm so it will not stall.
After the motor warms up the smoke seems to disappear and the motor idles and runs well.
The dual cab has done 297,000kms and does not do this at all.
I have only recently bought both cars so this is all new to me as well.
My daily driver is a D21 with a TD27 in it and that has travelled 500,000kms and does not do this. I am thinking it’s something that only happens to the QD32 engine series so I am watching this thread with interest.

the other thing that can cause white smoke is bad injection timing. often due to worn injection pump. but also can be caused by fuel restriction as timing is controlled by fuel pressure. so blocked filters or blocked tank pickup, crushed fuel lines etc. also air being sucked into fuel lines.
this is why some people install electric diesel lift pumps. it keeps the fuel pressure up and helps correct for the pump wear, plus keeps the air from being sucked in.

Good advice Tweak'e. I've got a 1999 Navara Dual Cab 165,000 Km, which has been hard to start and it was blowing white smoke on start up after a double glow of the plugs. So I changed the glow plugs and injectors, straight after I had a new exhaust fitted as the old one had seen better days with a crack in it, it went from blowing white on start up to blowing black smoke when on the trip home. I had to drop it back into second gear and give it a belly full going up over Buderim to pass a guy towing a trailer. Bloody thing is still being a bitch to start and was thinking today it could be restricted fuel as I have to pump the peddle a couple of times to get it started. Thanks mate there's a couple of things for me to have a look at, I was also thinking the alternator was buggered but had a new battery installed recently and they reckon it was OK but the old girl seems to be struggling to turn the engine over at times but then again I don't drive it much and when I do it's not very far.

Doesn't make sense as to why? when we put in the brand new injector's it blew smoke way worse then with the old one's in.

With regards to the glow plugs- mechanic says

either new ones are bad. seen it happen especially with cheap ones or reco ones.

the other is that the extra spring pressure is making it inject a tad latter, which if the timing is retarded will make it worse.

Hi Tweak'e, we have found that the inlet pipe to the injector pump has a slight kink in - do you think this could be the problem? Although it has obviously been like this since we bought it and this problem only started happening a month or so after we bought it.

Thanks for your replies.

yes that certainly could be the issue, or its got a kink in it because its being sucked in, due to a restriction elsewhere.
