Just Bought a D40 - What Maintenance to you Suggest?

Since I hijacked this thread I thought I should post an update. Replacing the neutral position switch was well worth while - so much easier to do hill starts, particularly when pulling a trailer. I now only need 'normal' revs rather than lots of revs and riding the clutch. Guess the ecu...

Just Bought a D40 - What Maintenance to you Suggest?

Sorry to hijack your thread, but saw your comment about replacing the neutral position switch. Can anyone tell me if a faulty neutral position switch has any real effect? I've been using the fast idle switch on cold mornings (2009 UK spec manual D40), and the fast idle doesn't disengage when I...

    Two problems or one?

I've recently noticed the occasional misfire from my 2009 VSK D40 DCi. Only once or twice in an hour long trip, and usually when I'm taking off from the lights or otherwise accelerating from low speed (I guess it may happen other times but wouldn't be as noticable when I'm moving normally). I...

    D40 Alternator pully gone missing

I was able to just screw a new pulley on (with a rattle gun). Both Nissan and aftermarket pulleys are available. I think others have had the thread on the shaft stuffed when the pulley exits so new alternator time. Depends how lucky you are.

    D40 Alternator pully gone missing

Snap (pun intended), it also happened to me. I was pulling a loaded horse trailer up hills at the time, but thankfully only 5 minutes from home. Needle was well into the red by the time I stopped, but no damage thankfully. Clearly a crap design.

    Alternator pulley gone missing!

Seems like a common problem that simply shouldn't occur if the alternator was designed properly! So I now have a nice shiny new pulley which has been firmly attached with a rattle gun. Needless to say not from Nissan who wanted over NZD600 plus GST for the pulley alone...wtf! After a...

    Alternator pulley gone missing!

Driving home today pulling 1.5 ton of trailer+horse and heard a bit of a bang under the front. Still driving fine, but shortly afterwards I noticed the battery & warning lights were on. Only about 1.5km from home so I kept going. Right towards the end the temp gauge started going up and was...

Electric window issues - won't go up.

Easy enough to pull one of the switches apart and clean it. I had a window that would only go up but not down - loads of crud cleaned off the contacts and it's been fine since.

    GPS MAP UPDATE

Possibly not relevant to Navaras, but I had a discovery 3 a few years back and sat nav updates weren't available any more. A smart person found out that some Subaru models used the same map format and you could simply insert their cd to get up to date maps. Worked a treat. So if anyone has a...

    Gutless from idle

Thanks Tony, that's a comprehensive reply :) 600kg of bike & trailer wow! I rode/raced sports bikes for 30 odd years till my body told me enough was enough, and now just look enviously at guys on bikes... sigh... I'm not going to have a chance to play with the Nav for a bit but will graph the...

    Gutless from idle

Example when in neutral at 1500rpm. Compare this to the link I posted earlier where the other guy had boost at idle.

    Gutless from idle

I've always thought my 2009 VSK was a bit lacking in grunt at takeoff. If I don't warm it up on a cold morning it barely gets up my (admittedly steep) drive. I tried replacing the BCS a while ago but the replacement was a dud(!) and in the end I just adjusted my driving style and forgot about...

    Navara acceleration problem

If the turbo eventually kicks in then it's unlikely that it's at fault? More likely that the boost solenoid is sticking? Try bypassing the boost solenoid by running the vacuum hose directly to the turbo (rather than via the solenoid) then go for a drive. Also worth checking that the vac hoses...

    Carrying 8x4 plywood & plasterboard

@redkite - Yeah, agree a sheet of ply sitting on the wheel arches and tailgate is simple but it's pretty easy to stuff the edges of plasterboard if it slips a little bit so I'd rather transport it level if possible. @gunmetalgrey - hmmmm, good thinking! Could just trim & join a couple of sheets...

    Timing chain kit - Brands?

Yeah, that's what I used. I swapped a few emails beforehand and they confirmed the kit suited my VIN. Seemed to me that the kit fitted most models but worth checking the VIN if you go down this route as I've no idea if the kit varies by year etc. Their water pumps and other bits can save a few...
